He won three nebula awards, one being for life time contribution to the field of science fiction and fantasy. Fred is a recognized grand master of science fiction. He is one of the cofounders of the Futurians, whose members included Donald A. Wolheim, Issac Asimov, James Bliss and Damon Knight. In addition to writing short stories and novels, as well as editing magazines in the genre, he also was a literary agent for fifteen years. He also taught students about the craft of writing genre related works.
In his autobiography, Frederik Pohl said that he was constantly asked three questions.
- Mr. Pohl, how do I become a writer? You sit down and write.
- Mr. Pohl, how do I become a published writer? You send out what you have written to someone in a position to pay you for publishing it.
- What do I need to study to become a writer? Nothing, but touch typing would be useful. [Remember, these questions were asked in the forties, fifties, and sixties before the advent of computers.]
He had contributed to the way the writing profession now operates. He was a prolific writer in the science fiction and fantasy genres, who also was an editor and later an agent to help his fellow writers to sell their work.
